Chalky Teeth

Questions related to chalky teeth and it’s management.

In many cases, this is referring to a condition called molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). Clinically, problems arise due to the reduced mineral content in the tooth enamel, as well as other changes in the tooth. MIH presents with varying severities and appearances. Teeth have white/opaque through to orange/brown defects.

The management of MIH can be challenging due to a number of reasons and often children are referred to us for specialist care. Treatment is dependent on the location, severity and extent of affected teeth and may range from careful monitoring, protective fissure sealants, filling or in the most severe cases, extraction. Early assessment and management is strongly recommended.
